Tools of the Spirit

Little Jimmy tripped, and his knees had an unpleasant encounter with the road surface. His mom picked him up and noticed only a small scratch. She, however, lovingly cuddled him in her arms holding him close to her. He soon stopped crying, not because his knees did not hurt anymore, but because she embraced him with pure love and joy.

Have you also noticed that there is always a smile on the face of loving parents in the presence of their children?

We sometimes forget that every person is body, soul and spirit regardless of race, gender or religion. God is Spirit, and everyone has a special spiritual quality that He endowed him or her with. Love and joy are instrumental qualities, the arms and hands of the human spirit. Science proved this to be true!

Scientists proved that our attitude is capable of changing the world around us. They have done an experiment, by putting clean, clear water in small containers. They gave the water to a number of people and asked them to keep the water with them while displaying an attitude of love, joy and goodwill all the time. After some time, they froze that water, and they discovered that every frozen specimen was different from normal ice.

The specimens were not only bigger in size but were the most beautiful ice crystals. It was completely different from crystals of any other normal water, which is usually in the form of similar sized lumps of dull ice crystals.

Love, joy and positive attitudes are our spiritual tools.

Suddenly, we begin to understand why God told us that love is the most important commandment in the universe, not only for the sake of creation but also because God desires to experience our love. Now we know why God wants us to be filled with joy all the time (Phil 4:4, 5).

Now we understand why people who did not experience the love of their parents, miss so much in life. They must carry a black void of ice-cold nothingness in their hearts. Now I know why they cry so much when they meet Jesus for the first time, from the moment, He starts talking to them in the language of love and joy.

Next time when you meet that unpopular grumpy person with the awful attitude, just smile and love him with a different attitude, your spiritual arms and hands. He would notice the difference immediately.

Bear in mind that the only way someone else might be able to experience the love of God, is when you are in their presence, using your spiritual tools.

Fragrance of a Spirit

I felt so sorry for myself this morning as I pondered what I call my miserable life. The past month or more I’ve intensely become aware of my mistakes in life, of the people I’ve let down, of failures in businesses and many, many more to leave me sulking in the Lord and wondering how He could still be loving me. However, I saw Him tenderly holding my head against His chest comforting me. Then He told me the following:

“What do you see when you open your eyes?”

I was sitting at my desk and the first thing I noticed when I opened my eyes were the flashing lights of the internet hub and network hub on my desk, “I see those flashing lights Lord.”

“Yes, Ken, those lights in front of you are indicating that they constantly search for a signal to devices that is connected to it. Likewise, I am searching for signals of people who are connected to Me, those who have decided to follow Me. I pick up each and every signal of prayer and worship with joy.

At this time in your life you feel your life is wasted. You feel you’ve made too many mistakes and you have disappointed too many people to be of value any more. Because of that, you feel that it would be impossible for Me to love you or assist you any longer.

Now, listen closely, I love you unconditionally and I love you regardless of all your mistakes. Loving you and experiencing your love is like touching and feeling the most beautiful flower in the world. You have a unique fragrance. Every person has a unique fragrance equal to the uniqueness of a fingerprint. You and everybody else have been endowed with a different and unique fragrance each

I gave dogs a special gift of smell to detect the odour of someone who walked in nature the day before and follow the footprints leading to the person for miles. They are able to detect the odour of the person’s footprint where it only momentarily touched the ground.

I am able to detect the fragrance of your spirit and I love it! Every prayer of a believer is incense, a wonderful fragrance going up to God (Rev 8:4). I know instantly who that fragrance belongs to the moment I receive it.

Each fragrance smells awesome. It is a fragrance equal to a room full of roses mingled with love and light, framed by a smile revealing an open and honest heart. I love to smell that fragrance all day long! Can you imagine how awesome the fragrance is of many people, each with their own individual fragrance worshiping Me together?

Contrary to you we find fallen spirits, the demons, who have become rotten and each of them has a horrible disgusting smell. Some people follow them and tragically will become as they are.

You have been redeemed. Never stop praying – talk to Me continually. Why would you follow Me and not talk to Me all day long? I love the fragrance of your spirit!

PS – You’re not the only one with mistakes. In fact, I know nobody who is without it.”

The Guest

Many years ago, I invited Someone to live with me and since that day He had been a Guest in my mansion. Lately, I became curious how He was, living with me, and I walked up the stairs towards His room.

When I knocked on His door, I could see the Name “Holy Spirit” written on the door. “Come inside,” a kind voice came from inside.

This is my mansion but I did not even know what this room looked like on the inside. Contrary to the rest of the rooms, this one was brightly lit and shining white.

“How may I assist you?” He asked. “After many months you finally decided to pay Me a visit again?”

I did not know what to answer. “I’m sorry, yes, it is true. You’ve always assisted me in everything but I have noticed that You’ve grown somewhat quiet recently. Why?”

“Since you’ve invited Me to live with you, I have been watching over you but you’ve become so busy lately, I try to stay out of your way,” He said.

“You never complain or mention anything You need for Yourself, please tell me more.” I asked. “How are You really?”

He looked at me for a while before He answered. “I must admit I had to get used to living in this environment, being totally different from where I come from, but I am doing it gladly because this is what God wants Me to do.”

“The Father, Jesus and I are One, but we dwell in different locations. They are in heaven and I am with people who have invited Me to live with them. I am living in you as My temple and I am one with you too – however, you decide what we should do every day…. Amazing, isn’t it?”

“Now that you have asked Me, I must confess, I am a bit disappointed. I thought we would be doing so much more by now but If you don’t ask Me to spend the day with you, I stay in this room all day long.“

“Besides that, I want to praise and worship God constantly but If you do not decide to do that, I am unable to. You are My physical arms and voice and because I am living here, I cannot do that without you.”

“Even when you want to pray, you need Me too, but, and listen carefully, whatever God wants us to pray, He needs to hear the words spoken from your mouth.”

I felt so ashamed. I put Him in this inner room and expected Him to be satisfied. I thought He was so pleased to live in this mansion. Since the day He had been indwelling me, I had thought I was powerful enough to maintain a relationship with God on my own, ignoring the fact that my power lies in His presence. Even though He lives in me, I had come to realise that I know the Father and Jesus better than I know Him. To my shame, I had to admit that I tend to spend much more time with Jesus than with the Guest inside my house!

I walked over to Him, held Him close and asked Him to come out of His room and fill me and to remind me every day to honour the Father and Jesus through and, most importantly, with Him.

A Human spirit Sees and Hears

As a farmer at the age of thirty, I wanted to extend my farming business by buying another farm. When I bought the farm, the previous owner shared with me what had happened the first day when I visited him to look at his farm.

The owner, who is a Christian, usually spent his time early in the morning praying. That particular morning the Lord told him that the buyer of his farm would visit him that day. Very anxiously, he walked to his wife to share with her what God had revealed. His wife, who had her own separate time with God, told him that she had received exactly the same message. A few minutes later, my agent phoned them to make the appointment for my first visit!

For me this was a big wow! I was so surprised and amazed that this man and woman heard God speaking to them! This had never happened to me and I considered myself as a mature Christian!

I asked God to teach me to hear His voice, and He did. I was thirty years of age and my spiritual maturity was still in its childhood stage but from that moment on, it started to grow.

I discovered that when I prayed for an answer, I had to empty my mind, all my thoughts completely. When I asked God to give me a scripture, I soon saw the book, chapter and verse in my mind and when I read it, it was spot on. Every time He gave me a text, I anxiously read it to hear His answer. That was the first step of my spiritual development.

Then I discovered that my spirit could see what my eyes were unable to see and could hear what my ears were unable to detect.

It is awesome how much wisdom we get from the Holy Spirit, but unfortunately we seldom recognise the wisdom as coming from the Holy Spirit.

For instance, one day I wanted to do some maintenance on our beach house. When I put the tools into my car, my eye caught other tools that I would not need for the particular job at hand. However, those tools caught my attention as if I should know to take them as well.

Then I realised that it could be the Holy Spirit showing me what I was going to need and I took it with. Needless to say, I soon discovered that I needed it for something else that had to be fixed that I was unaware of at the time.

This taught me that what the Holy Spirit reveals to my spirit comes to life in my thoughts.

We tend to put what we can see, hear or touch in the category of the physical and the things in our mind or thoughts in the category of imagination. Consequently, the spiritual input we receive from God, is also put into the category of our imagination and regarded as unreal and untrue.

One difficulty we face is that a human being has a vivid imagination, causing us to doubt what God gives us, or on the other hand, assign our own ideas as to be coming from God.

Most importantly, we have to empty our minds completely while surrendering into the hands of Jesus to ensure that whatever we receive is not made up in our minds but comes from God. We can also ask God for confirmation of the message through other people, Christian books, preachers or through a Bible verse. No person is able to manipulate an answer received through a verse from Scripture that he does not know by heart. Gradually we learn how to see and hear in the spirit.

Filled with the Spirit

We open our hearts for God to enter. In our heart, which is understood as both the physical blood pump and our intimate cognitive existence, we find the heart of our spirit.

I would like to draw a metaphor by presenting the spiritual heart as a mansion with many rooms. Imagine the mansion with a reception hall at the entrance with beautiful tiled floors, huge windows and a big front door. Flowers and plants are standing all around this room while the sun is pouring through the windows. This represents your heart and every person could put in this room whatever he or she desires.

The main purpose of the exercise is to illustrate how a person functions with the Holy Spirit indwelling him.

In the heart or mansion, we would find the Holy Spirit living in one of the rooms. As soon as someone or something undesirable tries to enter, the Holy Spirit would come out of His room, down the stairs to warn the host, which is us, that the person or activity we intend to allow to enter, is actually a very bad idea.

The thing that would try to enter, could be anything, ranging from someone with unholy motives whom we intend to befriend or an unholy activity we are about to get involved with.

Once the Holy Spirit has warned us, we have to decide what to do. Once we have made our decision, the Spirit retreats back into His room, still keeping His eye on us.

Have we decided to stop the person or the activity, everything is fine, but when we disobey the warning of the Spirit, it grieves Him immensely. After we have disobeyed the Spirit, He would change His fellowship with us. The next time when a similar threat lurks, He would once again come down the stairs to warn us but this time His voice would be a little softer than it was before.

Some people wonder why the Holy Spirit has become so quiet in their lives. One reason could be that since the first time a person became aware of his sins, he still kept on doing it, with the result that the Holy Spirit has retreated.

Should the disobedient behaviour persist, the Spirit would perhaps warn him again but this time however, He would stay on the first floor, keep a little further back and speak even more softly until He does not come out of his room any more because the subject does not listen anyway.

This is why Paul told the people of Thessalonica that they should listen to the Holy Spirit, or they might put out the fire of the Spirit inside.

Filled with the Spirit is different. Difficult or more important tasks on hand demand a more surrendered attitude towards the Holy Spirit. For instance, to bring the message of Jesus to people would be impossible without the assistance of the Spirit.

One should ask The Holy Spirit first to fill him for that specific purpose. The moment he does that, the Spirit comes out of His room and His presence fills the whole mansion to assist the mind, voice and body.

Behind the scenes, more takes place because when we ask the Spirit to assist us, He also touches the hearts of the people who are listening.

To be a human being with a spirit is wonderful. To have the Spirit of God as a Guest in our hearts is awesome. To be able to have a living relationship with the Creator of the universe is more than us mortals are able to grasp.

The baby Spirit

Every person inherits his body and soul from his parents but his spirit comes fresh from God and he receives it before he is born.

In Luke 1 two pregnant women met. In the womb of Elizabeth the unborn baby, John the Baptist, sensed the presence of unborn Jesus in Mary and he reacted with joy by leaping in his mother’s womb.

This unborn baby in Elizabeth’s womb was physically incapable of hearing, not to mention understanding what had happened because his little body was still in the process of being developed inside the womb. Nevertheless, his spirit perceived the spirit in another woman’s womb. He reacted this way because he recognised the spirit of Jesus, confirming that we receive our spirit before we are born and still inside the womb.

Abortion at any stage after conception is killing a living human being.

Keep in mind however, that although our spirit is wise from birth, it is influenced by everything we do and it will look different at the end of our life due to these influences.

Our spirit is us. It is not a separate person living in our body. When we receive our spirit from God, it is united with our body and soul and we become human being. Separating body from spirit in any way leads to death of the human being.

It is so important to teach a child as early as possible to have a close relationship with Jesus, teaching him all the aspects of the spirit world so that he can be spiritually mature at an early stage. This does not mean that the child will miss his childhood days and become a young adult ahead of time. On the contrary he will have a fuller and much more rewarding childhood.

Some people will discover that the over-emphasis of their physical body and its desires, has led them to be unaware of their spirit, sometimes even denying the existence of a spirit.

Millions have unanswered questions because they have never learnt how to listen for answers which God, who is Spirit, speaks into their own spirit which came from God. God loves them so much and He answers and guides them but they are unable to hear what He says. What happens next is that they blame Him for not listening to their problems and not caring for them!

We are mostly unaware of the fact that it is our spirit who experiences the Holy Spirit and unless we spend time in developing and nurturing this relationship between our spirit and the Holy Spirit, we will remain spiritually immature. Maturity implies all three: body, soul and spirit.

Our spirit, in contact with and led by the Holy Spirit is able to pray in ways otherwise impossible (1 Corinthians 14:14, 15) .

Our spiritual ears need tuning in to receive spiritual guidance from God.

To have Jesus 24/7 with us is the most wonderful experience. Without the Holy Spirit tenderly caressing our human spirit, this would not have been possible.

Human Spirit

Someone who had a near death experience described to me what heaven looks like. He could see and feel the green grass. He could also hear, talk, think and remember.

A spirit is a very powerful entity, able to move without legs, hear without ears and do all the things we are able to do but without a physical body. When God created physical human beings, He had to create organs like ears and eyes and a brain in order to do what a spirit is able to do. The spirit has all the capabilities and more than the body has. God created all the angels and spiritual creatures in heaven. They can move, think, speak and experience emotion. Our spirit is no different.

It is easy to understand the body because we are able to see, touch, analyse, dissect and examine it. The soul is more complicated but it can nevertheless, be studied.

The spirit with its invisible and untouchable character, makes it the most complex entity to describe or study. It is one part that we know the least of and yet, it is the most important part.

Because we cannot understand the world of spirits, many Christians still do almost nothing to develop their spiritual experience, and consequently find it hard to have a relationship with the Holy Spirit.

Our spirit is able to communicate with the spirit world, including God.

When we die, our spirit will either go to heaven or go to hell.

It is unfortunate that some Christians find it hard to believe in the existence of the human spirit. Satanists and many non-Christian religions however, believe in the existence of the spirit world as second nature. They often operate actively in the spirit world, although very negatively.

Some people believe incorrectly that our spirit is not active when the body is active. However, the spirit and the brain are constantly interconnected and “communicating” even though we may not be aware of the communication, hence the name “subconscious”. Because we give all our attention to our physical side, the activities of the spirit only become evident when a person rests and starts to calm down.

We are so busy applying our brains in our natural environment that we incorrectly regard our spirit as a silent partner.

Scientists claim that the processing power of the conscious mind is two thousand bits of information per second while the processing power of the spirit is four billion bits per second! The human spirit is indeed not a sleeping partner.

It is a tragic state of affairs that God intended us to operate in complete harmony with body, soul and spirit. We, on the other hand, tend to concentrate on the body only. How different could it be if we would only grasp the fact that we are supposed to operate as a unit.

The most significant fact is that a human being is body, soul and spirit and since his birth, he has to develop and grow into a mature human being, not in body only, but also in soul and spirit.
